Buddy Bags make ‘huge difference’ to children arriving at Glow’s refuge
This week at Glow, we’re highlighting the amazing work of The Buddy Bag Foundation.
The Buddy Bag Foundation provides backpacks, called Buddy Bags, that are given to children in emergency situations. We give a Buddy Bag to every child that comes to stay with us in refuge.
The contents of a Buddy Bag varies, depending on age and gender, but a typical backpack includes both essential and comfort items, such as toiletries, pyjamas, underwear, a book and a teddy bear.
There’s also support for parents in the backpack, with a small support card to offers words of reassurance.
The aim of a Buddy Bag is to make the transition into emergency care a little bit easier and staff at our Cheadle refuge say it makes a big difference.
Team Leader Sandy Sykes said: “A Buddy Bag is something that a child can keep with them for comfort during a difficult time.
“Whether a child comes to us with a few belongings, or nothing at all, we can always see the difference it makes when they receive the backpack.
“I think the biggest thing is that the Buddy Bag shows them that someone out there cares enough to put something together just for them. They always treasure what’s
inside and it provides them with a lot of comfort.
“It’s always a huge support to parents too. Quite often we’ll see mums get emotional when their child opens their backpack.
“The work that The Buddy Bag Foundation does is amazing – we’re so grateful to them for supporting our children and young people.”
