Glow supports male victims of domestic abuse #ThisChristmas

This Christmas at Glow, we’re fundraising to support survivors of domestic abuse living in our safe accommodation services.

Our #ThisChristmas campaign will focus on changing the present and creating a safer festive season for those escaping domestic abuse.

We help women and children fleeing domestic abuse, but unlike similar charities we also support men. It’s important to recognise that anyone can be a victim of relationship abuse and that support for men is available.

We support men through our community-based safe accommodation, which we run alongside our Stoke-on-Trent refuge. We have single and family units, so we can support men with children, or men who have regular contact with their children. We are also able to signpost men to other services.

Our staff provide support tailored for men and have completed training with male domestic abuse charity, ManKind, to make sure they can offer specialist support in complex cases.

Christmas is a hard and potentially triggering time for anyone spending it in refuge. For men, it’s no different. The men that we support are always welcome to be involved in the festivities and given food and gifts, including gifts for their children. This year, tickets for a carol concert and the local pantomime have also been provided.

Senior Domestic Abuse Practitioner Chloe Collins said: “We try to make Christmas a happy time for the individuals and families that we support, but this means different things for different people, whatever their gender.

“The most important thing is that the men we support are kept safe when they are with us, and support is always available for men experiencing abusive behaviour in their relationships.”
