Christmas at refuge was a ‘safe and special time’ for Zara and her daughters

This Christmas at Glow, we’re fundraising to support survivors of domestic abuse living in our safe accommodation services.

Our #ThisChristmas campaign will focus on changing the present and creating a safer festive season for those escaping domestic abuse.

We have three refuges and community-based safe accommodation across North Staffordshire that provide shelter and support for people fleeing abuse, to help them start a new chapter and rebuild their lives.

When people experiencing abuse are ready to seek support, our safe accommodation services provide a secure and welcoming space, free from violence and abuse.

Mum-of-two Zara moved into refuge last year with her daughters, seven year old Mia and five year old Khai.

Zara had suffered physical and emotional abuse from her husband, which was witnessed by both of her daughters.

She shared her experience of spending Christmas in the safety of refuge last year.

Zara said: “I was frightened to move as Staffordshire was an area that I had never visited before and knew nothing about.

“I was anxious and afraid, but I was made to feel so welcome, and most importantly safe.

“We don’t celebrate Christmas, but it was such a special time at refuge, especially for my children. They hadn’t experienced any of the Christmas traditions before, so I encouraged them to get involved.

“They had so much fun decorating the tree, pulling crackers and taking part in all of the lovely activities the refuge staff arranged.

“Even with the Covid-19 measures, staff still arranged an individual celebration for each family.

“They hosted a party for the three of us and my two girls received gifts, they were so excited and thrilled.”

This year, Zara and her daughters will be spending their second Christmas in our refuge. The family have become an important part of Glow’s refuge community and are always keen to be involved in activities.

Zara said: “Last Christmas in refuge was special. It was amazing to see my children happy decorating the tree and receiving gifts.

“We’re really looking forward to Christmas this year and can’t wait to help with the preparations.”

We are supporting Zara and her family with moving on safely in the future. By supporting our #ThisChristmas campaign you can change the future for families like Zara’s.
