We’re hosting a virtual conference for dentists and health professionals about the vital role they play in ending domestic abuse.
Around 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in the UK will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. Many victims want help but don’t know how to reach out or have limited opportunities to speak to someone.
Health professionals are often the first people victims will disclose to and therefore it is vital that they understand how to spot the signs of domestic abuse and how to respond.
The conference comes after Glow ‘s involvement as one of only eight national Pathfinder pilot projects across England looking to improve the response and embed a ‘Whole Health’ approach to tackling domestic abuse. Here, we specifically looked at how dentistry and mental health services can improve both their understanding and their response to domestic abuse.
During the event, we will be sharing best practice guidance and launching our here to help campaign to support dentists with our mission to address, overcome and end domestic abuse.
Alongside Glow, conference-goers will also hear from Nicole Jacobs, Designate Domestic Abuse Commissioner, who’ll be providing an update on the government’s approach to tackling the issue, and survivors who will speaking about their experiences.
Hayley Ferns from Glow is organising the event: “Every victim of domestic abuse deserves the right response at the right time, to make them safe sooner. Domestic abuse has a profound impact on physical and mental health and often survivors find it difficult to access the support they need.
“We know that it can take on average 5 attempts before victims receive adequate support, therefore it is vital health services invest in domestic abuse training for their teams.
“With the right information and tools, health professionals will be better equipped to ‘ask the question’ or respond to disclosures of Domestic Abuse more effectively and efficiently.”
